Safe And Well Visits

A Safe and Well referral allows you to request a free, personalised home fire safety visit to reduce fire risks and support wellbeing.

Start the referral process here

What a Safe and Well Visit Involves

Safe and Well visits are person-centred home safety assessments conducted by firefighters or fire prevention officers. They aim to:

  • Assess fire risks in every room and provide tailored advice to reduce hazards https://www.westyorksfire.gov.uk/
  • Ensure working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and maintained https://www.hantsfire.gov.uk/.
  • Help create household escape plans and identify mobility or health issues that may affect evacuation
  • Offer guidance on wider wellbeing topics, such as falls prevention, stopping smoking, alcohol reduction, keeping warm, and social isolation.
  • Provide referrals to partner agencies (e.g., Age UK) for additional support, with the individual's consent

Visits are tailored to individual needs and may include practical interventions like fitting smoke alarms or issuing fire-retardent bedding.

Who Can Be Referred

Safe and Well visits are generally prioritised for vulnerable individuals, including:

  • Elderly residents or those living alone
  • People with disabilities or health conditions
  • Individuals recently discharged from hospital with fire safety concerns
  • Residents who have experienced a recent fire or have fire hazards in the home.

Referrals can be made for yourself or on behalf of someone else, provided you have their consent

How to Make a Referral

  1. Online Check: Many fire services partner with Safelincs to provide a quick online home fire safety check. Completing this can trigger a follow-up Safe and Well visit if needed.
  2. Professional or Carer Referral: Professionals can submit referrals through dedicated pages for carers or partner agencies.
  3. Direct Contact: If online forms are not accessible, you can contact the fire service by phone or email to arrange a referral.
  4. Urgent Cases: If there is an immediate fire risk or credible threat, contact the fire service directly by phone rather than using the referral form

Additional Support

During or after a visit, fire services may provide:

  • Fire safety handbooks and personalised action plans
  • Advice on energy efficiency and cold home support through programmes like Green Doctor
  • Referrals to other agencies for multi-agency support
